About the IRS


 The Islamic Resource Society is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO)/Community Based Organization (CBO) established on the 17th November 1993.  This organization seeks to address the needs of the Muslim community and by extension the wider community by providing social support services.  These services may take the form of spiritual, educational, recreational, physical, financial and social programmes. 

The Islamic Resource Society is mainly comprised of persons who have returned to the deen of Islam and who live in deprived areas in Trinidad.

Overview
The Islamic Resource Society, IRS has successfully coordinated the annual Emancipation Day and Indian Arrival Day Lectures, in recent years the IRS has hosted these programmes with the assistance of the Anjuman Sanatul Jamaat Association (ASJA) and the Trinidad Muslim League (TML).

The Islamic Resource Society is an active member of the United Islamic Organization of Trinidad and Tobago www.uiott.com.  Two executive members of the IRS are executive members of the UIO, namely Kwesi Atiba who holds the position of Vice Chairman and Mtima Solwazi who holds the position of Secretary.

The Islamic Resource Society has successfully hosted many seminars and workshops among these included: Budgeting Seminars, Small Business Seminars, Relationship Seminars, Leadership Training Seminars, HIV/AIDS & STD’s Workshops, Substance Abuse and Its Effects Workshops and Peer Educators Workshops.  The IRS also conducts regular classes in Children Islamic Studies, Elementary Islamic Studies and Intermediate Islamic Studies.  The IRS also hosted two successful camps for youngsters between the ages of five and fifteen.

In response to the Grenada disaster relief the IRS under the banner of the Green Cresent sent aide to the people of the Spice Isle.

In 2001 the Islamic Resource Society published two books of poetry for two of its members, Salim Razzaq - "Journeying through time" and Mtima Solwazi - "Reflections a compilation of poems" www.reflections-solwazi.4mg.com.  In 2005 Amir Bilaal Abdullah pened a book entitled "Peak Oil Paradigm Shift - The Urgent Need For a Sustainable Energy Model"  www.medianetcaribbean.com/pops.htm. 

 

Amir Bilaal Abdullah along with Kwesi Atiba hosts the weekly programme "Panchayat - a different kind of talk" on Prime Time Sunday from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. on i95.5/i95.7 FM.  Amir Bilaal Abdullah also hosts the Tuesday night segment of Face-Off and gives one of the weekly commentaries on i95.5/i95.7 FM. www.i955fm.com/applicationloader.asp?app=articles&id=1095

 

There also three members of the IRS who hosts three individual dynamic weekly programmes on the Islamic Broadcast Network, IBN Channel 8.  Mtima Solwazi - "Cultural Xpressions" Sundays from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.; Shamila Alexander - "Interior Designs" Sundays from 2:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. and Hashim Al-Mujahid - "It Concerns Us Too" Sundays from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

 

The Islamic Resource Society has established a co-operative under the name “Jamila Balewa Funeral Co-operative Society”.  The object of the Society shall be to:

v     Provide burial facilities to members

v     Assist members in all aspects of funeral arrangement

v   Purchase and own property
